At this point, it’s almost impossible to imagine a world wherein PinkPantheress’ “Boy’s a Liar” remix with Ice Spice doesn’t exist. But as revealed in a recent interview, the singer was “not really interested” in the idea of remixing the track at first, at least in terms of how her label initially presented it to her.

Such details are tucked into a Billboard feature on Ice Spice, available here, with PinkPantheress telling Heran Mamo that Warner Music UK was first pushing for a remix to the 2022 Take Me Home single by citing the typical charts-boosting rationale. For PinkPantheress, however, revisiting the Mura Masa-assisted cut only made sense under one condition.

“People kept mentioning it to me for charting reasons, but I was not really interested,” the artist said.

In fact, she made it clear at the time that she was only up for trying this approach if she could recruit another woman who was also experiencing an industry rise. Enter Ice Spice, who PinkPantheress says was already following her on social media when the initial idea for what later became “Boy’s a Liar Pt. 2” was sparked.

“And she was really up for it,” PinkPantheress said, noting that she had “casually asked her” in a DM about doing the track together. From there, the process moved quickly, with Spice sending over her contributions mere days later, followed by the shoot for the remix’s official video that’s now netted more than 115 million views on YouTube.

“Boy’s a Liar Pt. 2” debuted in February, quickly becoming a breakthrough moment for both artists. The track, an undeniable worldwide smash, gave Pink and Spice their first-ever top 10 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart. At the time of this writing, the song was still in the top 10, coming in at No. 9 between The Weeknd and Ariana Grande’s “Die for You” and Taylor Swift’s “Anti-Hero.”
